One man was fatally stabbed and another severely injured before police in Manassas, Virginia, fatally shot a suspect on Tuesday, officials said.
The Prince William County Police Department said officers were called to an apprenticeship training center in Manassas around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday for an initial report of a stabbing inside the JATC/NECA International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 26 training center.
When officers arrived, they encountered a man with a knife near the front entrance who was presumed to be the suspect.
"More than one officer opened fire from their department issued handguns, striking the suspect who was pronounced dead on scene," the police department said in a press release.
The two men who were stabbed were given first-aid before being transported to a local hospital. Police said all of the people involved in the incident were adult men.
Police said they recovered a knife at the scene.
One of the stabbing victims died, while the other is still in critical condition, police said. The identity of the suspect and the victims will be released after police notify their families.
"I've seen a couple of images inside it's horrific. You have folks who come out here to do some training and the next you know one has lost his life and another is struggling for his life in a local hospital. I can't imagine what the families are going through right now," Prince William County Police Chief Peter Newsham said during a press conference on Tuesday, WUSA9 reported.
Newsham did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment. According to the police news release, the Critical Incident Response Team will oversee an investigation into the incident. The response team is made up of police departments from 10 jurisdictions across the region, WUSA9 reported.
Police on the scene were wearing body cameras. Newsham said the department had 30 days to review the footage and decide if they should release it to the public, FOX 5 DC reported.
