Grammy Award-winning singer and former Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams has had a long successful career, but she's laughing right along with those who have to be reminded in a new commercial.
In the new Uber One Australia ad, the superstar jokes about fans not knowing her celebrity status, despite her many achievements.
In the commercial the 44-year-old singer struts through a park with sunglasses on before sitting next to a stranger on a bench. Williams then gets a notification on her phone from Uber One saying she saved $39.50 on Uber and Uber Eats.
"OK OK, my Uber One membership savings don’t disappoint," Williams says. She then sparks up a conversation with the woman sitting next to her. "You know what is disappointing? I was in one of the most iconic girl groups, and no one recognizes me."
Williams plays up the joke throughout the commercial. At one point, a man in the park seemingly recognizes her as he yells out "Michelle!" However, it's soon revealed he was calling out to his dog named Michelle, to the singer's disappointment.
Of course, the campaign seemed to be done with a playful spin. The singer talked about the new ad, in an Instagram video posted to her page on Monday.
"The Uber Eats commercial for that Australia, New Zealand territory is hilarious. I get to be in on the jokes. Certain jokes y'all know I don't care too much about, especially 24 years later," she said.
"There are just certain things I don't care about anymore. So, what a cool way to be like, 'the joke ain't on me, it's really on you' cause I don't care. That was so much fun."
Destiny's Child was formed in 1990 with Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. The famed girl group eventually ended up a trio with Beyoncé, Rowland and Williams.
Each member ventured into solo careers. Recently, Williams revealed she had been cast in the musical adaptation of "Death Becomes Her," based on the 1992 film. Williams and her castmates are set to perform at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre this summer.
